New Male Models

By popular request, we have two new male models. Mark is a professional body builder who,
of course, has the 'heroic male' figure. Dave is an actor and brings intensity and emotion to his
posing. We did motion studies with both of them as well as a few of our rotational figure studies. More of their work will be made available as we finish editing it, which will happen after we finish the next book, Art Models 7 Dynamic Figures for the Visual Arts. Many of their poses that do not contain full rotations are available for a reduced price. Hover over a pose thumbnail in the Pose Tool to see the price.

Beginning Motion Studies

We are beginning to experiment with stop-motion photography. Our first set was shot with our standard studio equipment. We used fixed lights that required a high ISO setting (resulting in a grainy picture), a low Aperture setting (resulting in out of focus pictures when Ana moved toward or away from the camera), and a relatively slow shutter speed (resulting in blurring when the motion was too fast). Despite these problems, we thought some people might be interested in the results so they are available in the session downloads area. This first attempt contains about 200 photos of Ana going through several quick motions like jumping and falling.
After this session, we immediately bought a faster flash that significantly reduced all of the problems for our next session, with Lola.

Ana has a background in theater, gymnastics, and dance as well as other performance arts. She is helping us with poses based on dance, motion, and drama. Her first session featured mostly poses based on dance movements that could be held for a rotation. We also spent some time practicing photographing rapid motion such as leaping and spinning. Future sessions will include Ana in motion photograhed front, back, and side. This is in preparation for book 7, which is being discussed in the forum.

New Model Eva

At just 5 feet 1 inch tall (155cm) and 100lbs (45.36 kg), Eva is a very petite model but still has well-defined muscles. We mostly used side and spot light for her poses. Her ethnic background is strongly Italian.
It is common for women to wear heels and heels significantly change the posture and form of the body. Because of this, we frequently shoot several poses with the model wearing heels (it's not an attempt to make the model look sexy). The effect on Eva is particularly dramatic

Vaunt has a classic pin-up style figure with broad rib cage and hips and a narrow waist. She also has strong, classic, and beautiful facial features. This has been a busy summer for new models. While we continue to look for local male models under the age of 35, the traveling models who come to our area continue to be the more typical young and beautiful women. SarahAnn is certainly no exception. She is a New York fashion model, with the dramatic look and posing of a fashion model. Many of Sarahann's poses were designed by her.

People have been asking for more "natural" poses. We took the opportunity of having Jenni here to photograph a model doing fairly natural things. We started by bringing in a prop we've never used before, a bed, and asked her to do some things she might normally do in bed. She did different sleeping postures, moved on to taking her night clothes off, reading in bed, etcetera. We also put a few artsy poses in there (we just can't seem to help ourselves). Later in the set she moved on to some sports related activities; some pushing, pulling, moving poses and some more artistic poses. At the end, we finished with a completely free form Expressions Session, in which Jenni did a creative and fabulous job! You can see the poses as they are finished in the Poses page.

Ginger was photographed with a variety of light sources. We used low, medium, and high contrast from a variety of directions. The high contrast light was a spot light overhead to the right. Medium contrast light came from a wider spotlight at shoulder height to the right. Low contrast light came from a softbox about 60 degrees to the left and slightly elevated. You'll notice how the shadows and the catch light in the eyes tell the story of the light source. Poses page.

Luana is a local model who adds some welcome diversity to the Art Models project. We photographed all her poses in a high contrast light which produces rich shadows. A little bit of floor-level fill light was added to keep the figure as evenly lit as possible as we rotated Luana through a full 360-degree rotation. This is a special session a bit unlike anything else we've done. It focuses on Becca getting dressed in three different outfits. Photographing Different Art Models in the Same Pose

One of the things I enjoy most about being the Art Director for Live Model Books is to being able to observe first hand the variation in the human form and the interpretation each life model brings to the pose. So I will frequently have a number of different models male and female of varying ages and fitness levels do the same poses. This is intentional so that you can observe the anatomy of the human form.

Some examples of this are one of our dynamic/action poses that I call 'on your mark,' to date this pose has been done by three different models mandy225
, jesse020, and shandra022. I have also posed several art models in the action of walking, I thought the variation on this one was particularly interesting take a look at at the difference between dan008 an older male model compared to bennetth015 a young male model and carolyne007 a young pregnant female model, jesse222 a twenty something athletic male model and jenh010 a young female model. I thought the variation of the stride and the hand placement was interesting.

There are also other poses based on classical works of art that can be explored and analyzed, such as a pose I staged based on the Dying Gaul. Take a look at mandy023, bennetth017, dan020 and jesse022. I would enjoy hearing your observations.

Also a short while ago, we received a request from an Artist in England, who had been commissioned to do a painting for a church that would depict Michelangelo's Creation and she needed some photographic references of a model in this pose. So we hired Michael (michael035)

and michael035O[verhead] who did a very good job recreating this wonderful piece. Since that time, I have also directed another older model in this pose again to show the variation in physique and the models style or interpretation of the pose. The other model was dan022) and dan022O[verhead]

Hello All,

This is my first blog entry. I am Maureen Johnson the Art Director for Live Model Books an independent publishing house. As the Art Director, I select the poses, style the models and the the setting and last but not least direct (and motivate when necessary : ) ) the models. The poses I select vary in style and many are based on input from our customers. The poses range from everyday, dynamic, clothed, unclothed, and classical poses inspired by great figurative art works.

I frequently use Rodin for inspiration when planning a modeling session. During one session with two of our art models Jesse and Shandra I had the opportunity to direct some very beautiful couples poses. Including our rendition of The Kiss (jesseshandra015) which had some interesting challenges, because Jesse and Shandra are of similar height it was necessary to raise Jesse up higher on the bench to achieve the needed angle which is interesting because in the original sculpture it is the exact opposite, the female model is raised up because she is much smaller than the male model. This is one of my recent photos of Shandra and Jesse, two art models I work with here in New England.

As the staff photographer for Live Model Books, I usually use medium or low contrast lighting (you'll see what I mean if you visit the site). But this pose really called for more dramatic light.

I photograph in rotation, so a challenge is setting up the light such that when the platform is rotated, you can still see the important parts. Here's another view.
